Jane Cox was unable to attend this evening's meeting*. The President decided instead to revive the tradition of an open meeting where members discussed questions of general interest. Many of the members spoke of their own experiences in searching their family's history. The Society was also able to peruse various books from the society library including our latest purchase the splendid "Lines of Succession" by Michael Maclagan. The proceedings were started by an account of the history of the Society and some of the characters involved with it, given by the President. Mr Nicholas Rogers gave a very interesting account of his encounter with what he thinks to be the first arms of the University in a 13th century manuscript, and based on the arms of the diocese of Ely. The topics then covered were very wide ranging, and included most of the sources used by genealogists, but with an emphasis on the little hitches which are never mentioned in the books. The meeting concluded at about 10.40 p.m. * due to her getting the dates mixed up p.p. R.B. Pinkham |
