Gown GuideClare CollegeThe Clare undergraduate gown is the basic gown but without a forearm slit and with three black velvet chevrons over the forearm seam. The Clare coat of arms (shown in the dexter half of the college arms) has three chevrons and the design of the college gown is presumably no coincidence. (It has also been suggested that the three black chevrons represent Lady Elizabeth de Clare's three husbands.) Drawing from Academical Dress of British and Irish Universities, G.W.
