St John's College

The St John's undergraduate gown is of the usual shape but without a forearm slit; over the resulting forearm seam there are four black velvet bars.

The following definition occurs in the Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary:
"Crackling 2b In Cambridge University slang, applied to the three [sic] bars of velvet on the sleeve of the gown worn by students of St John's College. (In reference to the nick-name of 'hogs'.)"
